Winder Farms, the Utah-based company that offers home delivery of milk, eggs and hundreds of other grocery items to Las Vegas residents, has opened a larger local distribution facility to better serve its growing customer base.
"Our new location offers a total of 13,300 square feet and will support our astounding customer growth in the Las Vegas market," said Bob Callaway, general manager of Winder Farms in Las Vegas. "We have doubled the size of our customer base since the beginning of 2008."
Winder Farms delivers groceries to more than 5,000 valley residents.
Customers have a standard order for items they need every week and can add items any week as late as 8 p.m. on the night before delivery.
In addition to dairy products and eggs, Winder offers meat and poultry, fruit, vegetables, salads and a host of other items.
The customers pay a delivery fee and purchase from Winder a cooler that keeps items fresh after delivery. Items are guaranteed to arrive before 8 a.m. (usually earlier), so many customers are able to bring them inside before leaving for the day.
The new warehouse at 6420 Cameron St. includes a 3,000-square-foot cold box with four temperature zones, which allows for storage of a variety of items.
The company is adding 12 newly designed delivery trucks in Las Vegas, all of which are equipped with advanced cooling systems.
Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has opened three more stores in the Las Vegas Valley.
The new grocery stores, which opened Oct. 8, are at Eastern Avenue and Fremont Street; Las Vegas Boulevard and Pecos Road; and in North Las Vegas at Las Vegas and Lake Mead boulevards.
The latest openings bring to 11 the number of Fresh & Easy Markets that have been added in the area since the company resumed its aggressive expansion strategy after a 90-day hiatus earlier this year. There are now 21 Fresh & Easy stores throughout the valley, and the company is fast approaching 100 stores in Nevada, Arizona and Southern California, its initial three U.S. markets.
Some market strategists speculated the delay in store openings was an indication Fresh & Easy was struggling with its strategy to bring a smaller grocery store concept to the United States.
At roughly 10,000 square feet, Fresh & Easy stores are designed to give customers a faster, easier shopping experience. The stores offer customers a range of Fresh & Easy private label and national brand-name products and a selection of prepared meals The company is subsidiary of British grocery store giant Tesco.
Fresh & Easy officials, however, said the hiatus was consistent with the company's original strategy to pursue an aggressive initial rollout of stores, followed by a short evaluation period, after which store openings would resume.
Fresh & Easy hired 250 employees in September to accommodate its continued growth. The company received more than 14,000 applications in August.
Tivoli Village at Queensridge introduced several new tenants at an event last month at One Queensridge Place.
The evening was highlighted by a cooking demonstration from Martin Yan, probably best known for his PBS cooking show "Yan Can Cook."
Yan said he has resisted offers to open a restaurant in Las Vegas for several years because he was looking for the right spot for a neighborhood restaurant.
"People told me for years I should open a joint on the Strip," Yan said. "But when I thought about it, I decided a Strip joint was not for me," Yan said, laughing.
Yan's offbeat sense of humor was a trademark on his television show and was on full display throughout his demonstration, which included cutting up a whole chicken in less than 30 seconds and preparing a chicken and vegetable dish for guests.
The name Martin Yan's 9 Dragons was chosen for the restaurant because of its lucky significance in Chinese lore. Yan said the cuisine represents eight traditional styles of Chinese cooking as well as his own creations.
Other retail and dining tenants unveiled include Ritual Spa & Salon, which will offer full-service salon treatments and wellness lifestyle services, and two San Francisco-based businesses.
Tres Agaves is known for authentic south-of-the-border cuisine and tequila. Townsend, which is known as The District in San Francisco, offers small plates of food and an eclectic selection of wines by the glass in a cozy setting that its owners described as "like your living room, but way cooler."
Tivoli Village at Queensridge and One Queensridge Place are part of the Queensridge master-planned community being developed on Rampart Boulevard near Summerlin.
