Clothing chain set to penetrate Las Vegas market

Much of the retail focus in recent months has been on the opening of high-end stores such as Barney's New York in the Shoppes at the Palazzo.

In a few months, however, a store with a decidedly different price point will make its entry into the Las Vegas market.

Steve & Barry's, a New York-based casual-apparel retailer, plans to open stores at Silverado Ranch and Grand Canyon Parkway shopping centers this summer.

The exact dates have not been set yet, but a spokeswoman for Steve & Barry's confirmed that both stores are targeted to open by midsummer.

The company was founded by Steve Shore and Barry Prevor, childhood friends who started out selling T-shirts at flea markets across Long Island, N.Y. The Steve & Barry's business model eschews traditional advertising methods and focuses heavily on word-of-mouth and other viral marketing methods to keep prices down. As a result, the company is able to offer a wide range of items for less than $10 and occasionally runs an $8.98 or less sale, during which all items in the store are at that price or less.

The stores offer a wide selection of sportswear, athletic shoes, accessories and team merchandise. The company sources apparel progressively, meaning it purchases product from a wide variety of manufacturers at different times throughout the year. The bidding among manufacturers allows the buyer to purchase at a lower per-unit cost than larger retailers that frequently have standing contracts with suppliers.

The company operates more than 260 anchor and junior anchor shopping center and mall-based locations in 38 states and is currently in the midst of a major nationwide expansion.

In recent years, Steve & Barry's has increased its product line to include celebrity-branded merchandise. Those products include Eleven, a collection of athletic and lifestyle apparel and sneakers by Venus Williams, the Bubbagolf collection by PGA Professional Bubba Watson, and the Starbury collection by NBA player Stephon Marbury.

It recently introduced the Bitten collection, the first-ever apparel line created by actress Sarah Jessica Parker. The collection of sportswear for women of all ages and sizes is sold exclusively at Steve & Barry's, and all items are priced at $19.98 or less.

The company plans to release more information about the local stores, including grand-opening dates, in the next few weeks.

  • It might soon be a little easier to find those trademark sandwiches in the plain-white wrappers.

Las Vegas-based Capriotti's Sandwich Shop, which already has 20 Southern Nevada locations, is looking to expand its operation here and in other markets. The company has chosen Gatski Commercial Real Estate Services to assist in the search for expansion sites.

"The plan is to open five to 10 more stores in the Las Vegas area in the next year, and (company officials) also have plans to expand into other major markets across the nation within the next several years," said Rob Lujan, vice president of leasing and brokerage for Gatski Commercial.

The company's signature sandwiches include the popular "Bobbie," a combination of homemade turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing and mayonnaise, to create a kind of Thanksgiving dinner for lunch and the Capastrami, which features hot pastrami, melted Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, and coleslaw.

Las Vegas is the sandwich shop's largest single market, but Capriotti's has 50 stores in eight states.

The sandwich shop seeks all types of sites, but is targeting neighborhood retail centers or anchored retail centers from 1,000 to 1,500 square feet with great visibility and high traffic.

Capriotti's plans to open its first Reno location this year, as well as a store in San Diego. The company is also fielding inquiries from investors interested in franchise opportunities.
